Well, in short...that's my farm trademark. the word "van" or "von" means "from" or "of" in Dutch. The town in which we live in, and that which my farm is named after is Bliss. Therefore, whenever a foal is born here it will have "van Bliss" to indicate "from Bliss." In the Netherlands, you will quite often see the family/farm name after the name of the horse on the registration papers. I thought it was a great way to distinguish horses you raised and sold from your farm, and so I have continued to do so. I try to stay true to the rich heritage and history the Friesians have. I try to choose names from the letters required that year for my foals that are, or at least close to being, Dutch. Sometimes, depending on the letters for that year, it may be rather difficult to choose a name due to limited choices. In that case, I break out the name books or go online to help find a suitable name with some meaning behind it. After all, who wants a magnificent horse to have an average, bizarre or dull name?? This year's letter are W,X, Y, and Z. Not so easy! I'm always open for ideas for names if you should have any to share. It's a fun process, but I don't really name the foal til it's born and I get to spend some time getting to know it's personality a bit. So, there ya go. A little Bliss factoid for the day!
